Pediatric Eye Exam

We Provide Pediatric Eye Care in San Antonio & New Braunfels

Pediatric eye screenings typically happen at the pediatrician's office, then if needed the child is referred to an eye doctor. The American Optometric Association recommends that children visit an eye specialist before there is a problem found by a general practitioner though. This is because many eye issues take an expert to diagnose, and many eye issues can be treated more effectively if they are caught early. At In Focus Eyecare, we provide pediatric eye exams for children and our patients in and around San Antonio & New Braunfels find their visits to be pain and fear free no matter their age.

What Happens at a Pediatric Eye Exam?

A pediatric eye exam is similar to an eye exam of an adult patient, except more care is taken to ensure their comfort through various procedures. In a pediatric eye exam, the doctor will first do a full inspection of the eye by checking eyes, eyelids, eye movements, pupils, and light reflection using a tool called an ophthalmoscope. After various light reflex testing, the doctor will likely do cover testing which detects misalignment of the eyes. The visual test for a pediatric appointment will be age appropriate, so if your child can not read or identify letters yet, do not worry.

What Vision Issues Are Unique To Children?

Amblyopia is more common to children than adults, it is also referred to as lazy eye. It is caused by poor vision in a single eye that appears normal. If left untreated it can lead to permanent impairment or vision loss Amblyopia can be in various forms: Strabismus is a misalignment also referred to non-professionally as cross-eyed, it can be one or both eyes they do not focus in the same direction and can be treated with glasses or surgery depending on the exact cause and patient. Another eye issue that is common in childhood are refractive errors are caused by incorrectly shaped eyes that causes blurry vision it causes nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. These issues are more common in children because a person is likely to have them diagnosed by adulthood.
